For those of you who use buses in Rutland, RCC have just issued this press release: COUNCIL SEEKS VIEWS ON MAKING BUS TRAVEL MORE ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERYONE
Residents and local organisations will have the opportunity to share their experiences of bus travel and help identify improvements to accessibility across Rutland’s bus network through a series of workshops organised by Rutland County Council.
The plan will look at how accessible local bus services are and identify improvements to help more people travel independently and confidently. This includes looking beyond the buses themselves at the whole journey, from planning a trip and reaching a bus stop to accessing travel information, boarding and getting to a destination.
The Council is organising two workshops, with both an in-person and an online session available for each, to give people a choice about how they take part.
The first workshop will focus on understanding people’s experiences of using local buses, the difficulties they may face and the support or changes that would help them travel more easily. The second workshop will build on this feedback, giving participants an opportunity to review what has been heard and discuss potential improvements and priorities for the local bus network.
The in-person sessions will take place at Catmose House, Rutland County Council’s offices in Oakham, with separate online sessions held through Microsoft Teams.
Disabled residents, older people, people with additional access needs, carers, disability and accessibility organisations, community groups and anyone with an interest in accessible bus travel are encouraged to take part.
Feedback from the workshops will help the Council develop its Bus Network Accessibility Plan for 2027 onwards, alongside evidence from bus stop accessibility audits, existing passenger feedback and other transport data. The plan will set out priorities for improving accessibility across the network and help guide future work with bus operators and other partners.
Cllr Oliver Hemsley, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Transport said:
“It’s important that we understand the challenges people face when using buses and listen to the people who experience them first-hand. These workshops will give residents and local organisations the chance to share their views and help us identify where improvements are needed.”
Places at the workshops can be booked through the Council’s online sign-up form. Participants will be asked to register their interest and select their preferred session.
