In the Middle Ages archery practice was a feudal obligation, and every settlement had its practice area.
The origin of the name “Butt Lane” may come from Middle English butte which was a ‘mark for archery’, ‘target’, ‘goal’.
On Village Day (Sunday May 20th) Michael Anker will be running “Have a Go” Archery taster sessions on the Oval at 3:30 by the cricket nets for anyone who would like to re-create the medieval use of the area (but with modern recurve bows )
All ages and abilities are welcome to give it a try
Michael will be taking donations for Dove Cottage Day Hospice at Ridlington from participants

Thank you to all who have volunteered so far – to make the event a success, we will need more helpers and maybe a few more ideas – how about table-top sales or a few simple stalls like “Zap a Rat” or darts.
If you have some more ideas or would like to help with the event please call or email Paul Cummings:
Tel: 01780 720124 or email@example.com
Invitations and further details will be published next weekend.

Following the success of the 2016 event, the Parish Council are looking to support another Village Day event in 2018. We need your help in putting together a simple but fun event to celebrate North Luffenham as being a great place to Iive and to provide an opportunity for a memorable village event on the Oval. This might coincide with the Royal Wedding on 19th May or on another suitable occasion. We are looking for volunteers to join a Committee to help with planning and to help organise the event. Ideas such as fun sports competitions, fancy dress, dog show, stalls, bric a brac, cakes etc spring to mind. Would you like to help ? – if so please contact Paul Cummings – Tel: 01780 720124.
Sue Read and Vanja House would like to thank all the ladies and men who supported them with the most amazing selection of cakes buns and bread.
For the day, we raised the fantastic sum of £300 which we are passing on half to the Rutland Charity FRIR which provides advice on Cancer, Dementia, and other long time illnesses. The other half goes to improvements which are needed to maintain the pavilion on the Oval in order to encourage its use by village residents.
The Cricket Pavilion will be open from 2:00pm to 4:30pm and a BBQ and Bar with Live Music will be provided, along with the opportunity to Practise Cricket Skills in The Nets and Beat the Bowling Machine.
