NORTH LUFFENHAM GARDEN CLUB NEW SEASON

For everyone who would like to come and hear our programme of interesting speakers, we start the new season on Thursday 10 October 2019, in the Community Centre at 7.30 pm. Please see the Programme attached below for more details. If you would like to come as a non member or as a guest of a member you would pay £3 per meeting, and members pay an annual subscription of £15, payable in October.

We are hoping to increase our membership and therefore hope to see more people coming to join us, and that includes anyone from the surrounding villages who would be interested. Theres is no particular gardening knowledge required! just an interest in getting together to listen to our interesting and varied speakers.

Retired Research Dr & Lecturer from the University of Nottingham, now spreading his knowledge through his numerous different horticultural talks

12 Mar 20: Jeff Bates – Plant Propogation

Horticulutral lecturer, examiner, and garden designer demonstrating a wide range of vegetative methods, with a chance to participate

9 April 20: Our local Stephen Ashpole – Am I barking up the wrong tree?

14 May 20: Neil Timm – World of Ferns

Learn about the versatility of Ferns from nurseryman Neil of the Fern Nursery, Binbrook, a popular draw for keen gardeners

Autumn Village Show – Sunday 1st September

THERE ARE JUST A COUPLE OF DAYS LEFT to get your entries ready and come along to the show. A variety of categories include arts and crafts, photography, baking, beverage and jam making, floral arranging, as well as vegetables, fruit, plants & flowers. Get your children to make a miniature garden, an animal made from fruit, vegetables, flowers and foliage! or enter a piece of creative artwork. (See Schedule for more details).

Then bring them to the Community Centre on Sunday between 8.30 and 10.30 am. NB: Entries to be lodged on Saturday between 2.00 pm and 5.00 pm.

This is for all ages, and entries only cost 30p per exhibit (40p for non-members). We hope you will come along and join in this village event, and have some fun.

Tea and cakes will be served from 2.00 pm. Prizegiving at 3.45pm

North Luffenham Garden Club AUTUMN SHOW: Sunday 1st September 2019

Show Schedules have now been completed and are available from The Fox and Edith Weston shop. Otherwise please phone Cathy Davenport on 07393 205 393. We will be happy to drop one off; alternatively see attachment for printing.

Please do pick up a Schedule and all the information needed for entering the classes, if you have not entered before, is given inside. There is a range of classes, including arts & crafts, photography, home produce, flower arranging, garden produce etc. for adults and children and we encourage all to come and take part, it is great fun.

Outing to Brightwater Gardens and Norwell Nursery

Wednesday 12th June 2019. Brightwater Gardens, Saxby, Nr Lincoln and Norwell Nursery, nr Grantham

Would anyone wishing to join the group going on this day out please contact us (Katy Ellis 01780 722173/07845 987281). We have a few places left to fill.

The coach leaves the village at 9.30 am, the cost is £30 each for entry into both the gardens, including the travel, and a guided tour by Dr Andrew Ward at Norwell. We will need to take picnic lunches to eat in the gardens; tea/coffee and biscuits are available to buy.

It promises to be a lovely day out, so please come and join us!

NEXT MEETING and SUMMER OUTING

Please note, for those who were not at the April meeting, that the last monthly meeting of the current programme is to be held on Thursday, 16th May at 7.30 pm, and not tomorrow evening as would normally be the case.

Our speaker is Stephen Ashpole, with an illustrated talk on “There’s More to that Flower than you see”.

Garden Club Summer Outing – Wednesday 12th June   

This year’s day trip out will be on Wednesday 12th June with a visit to 2 gardens near Newark/Lincoln – Brightwater Gardens, Saxby and Norwell Nurseries.  Places are £30 per person which includes coach travel, entry to both gardens, a guided tour of Norwell Nurseries by owner, Andrew Ward plus tea/coffee and homemade cake.

Itinerary: Bus pick up North Luffenham (Church Street) 9.30am/Empingham (bus stop on Main Street) 9.45am; 11am arrive Brightwater; 1.15pm depart Brightwater for Norwell; 4.30pm depart Norwell

Please note you will have to provide your own picnic lunch, which can be eaten in the Gardens.

North Luffenham Garden Club

The April Garden Club meeting is on Thursday 11th April, at 7.30pm in the Community Centre and we would like to remind you that our speaker this month is nurseryman, Rob Potterton from Caistor N. Lincs, giving a talk about Alpines & Bulbs – From Mountain to Market.

As usual there will be hot drinks and a Raffle , with hopefully, some plants to buy as well. Please do come as everyone is welcome, including non-members.

Stamford Horticultural Society are holding their Spring Horticultural Show featuring Flowers, Produce and Handicrafts on SAT 13TH APRIL 2019 and would welcome entries from anyone interested.

If anyone would like to enter the show, please take your exhibit to the United Reformed Church, Broad Street, Stamford, from 8.00 am – 11.00 am on the day. The show is then open for viewing from 2 – 4.00 pm

Please note that it is the Christmas Social Gathering/Quiz, on Thursday 13th December at the usual time of 7.30pm in the Community Centre.  Everyone is welcome to this relaxed and friendly evening.  Drinks and food will be available and we hope you will bring a plate of  your favourite food to share.

Joe Whitehead, experienced head gardener for many years, including broadcasting, writing and being a panellist on gardening programmes.

14 February 2019     ‘A Garden for All Seasons’ – a detailed look at the planting in Diane’s garden at all times of the year, with practical ideas for increasing the flowering season    Diane Clement, Director of the Seed Exchange for the Alpine, Garden Society, with many years experience growing, showing and judging.


14 March 2019    ‘The Wonderful World of Salvias’ – sharing her extensive knowledge, also covering the rise in popularity of the genus and the origins of many of them.       Janet Buist, Formerly of Pennycross Plants

Don’t miss our Speaker, Mr Joe Sharman, the renowned plantsman from Monksilver Nursery, who will be here to give an illustrated talk all about Snowdrops, their history, cultivatiion and much more.

Refreshments, raffle, plants for sale and a warm welcome (Non members £2.00 per meeting). Meeting will include brief AGM.

The first meeting of our Autumn Season will be on Thursday 11th October, 2018, with guest speaker Jo Bennison, a specialist Peony nursery grower from Market Rasen, Lincs, talking on “Peonies – covering species peonies and how breeders have improved on older varieties” (http://www.bennisonpeonies.co.uk) 

The following meeting on Thursday 8th November, 2018,  will be with Joe Sharman from Monkslivery Nursery on Snowdrops.  

At meetings we start at 7.30 pm in the Community Centre with refreshments, a raffle, the guest speaker, and sometimes plants for sale.           Annual membership is £10 per person, payable from the October meeting, or £2 per guest for each meeting.  All are welcome, so do bring along a friend.

Garden Club Annual Autumn Show

The Committee regret that due to current circumstances the Autumn Show, scheduled to be held on Sunday 9th September, has been cancelled for this year.  The Show’s success relies on the efforts of the organisers, volunteers & helpers, and we need more of you!

As a Club we are currently looking for someone to take on the role of Secretary, and for more people to join the committee in general.  If you feel you would like to step forward, please contact Katy Ellis by calling 01780 722173, or e mailing:  ktellis1606@gmail.com

Outing to RHS Hyde Hall with Easton on the Hill Horticultural Society

On Saturday 21st July there are still places available for anyone who would like to join this outing.  It is a chance to visit these very fine RHS gardens.

North Luffenham Garden Club meeting Thursday 12 April at 7.30pm

This month on Thursday 12 April at 7.30pm in the Community Centre we will be welcoming Neil Tyers from the National Auricula and Primula Society. A specialist grower of Auriculas, he will give an illustrated talk on all aspects of growing and keeping these wonderful plants.

For our final speaker of the season, on Thursday 10 May, we will have a presentation from a previous visitor to our garden club, Geoff Hodge, looking in detail at scented plants in the garden. Geoff is a prolific garden writer, with a wide area of knowledge which he loves to pass onto other gardeners.

All welcome, non members pay £2.

North Luffenham Garden Club Meeting this Thursday 8th March at the Community Centre starting at 7.30pm.

This month Trevor Rogers, an experienced fruit grower and former RHS tutor, will be holding an interactive fruit growing clinic. We look forward to learning better ways of growing and enjoying the fruits of our labours.

As always, we  welcome non members, (guests £2.00).
