We are taking part in the Big battery Hunt which is one of the largest recycling challenges in the UK. The challenge is to collect as many batteries as we can before Easter to be in with a chance of winning some science themed prizes for school as well as teaching the children the importance of recycling. If anyone has any batteries could they please drop them in at school or there is a collection bucket in the Community Centre foyer.

Are you ready for winter?

As the nights get colder and darker, the chances of severe weather increase. Since 1990, gas and electricity network companies have invested over £80bn to make the UK’s gas and electricity supply more reliable than ever before. But storms, floods and other extreme weather can still cause damage and disruption.

That’s why the UK’s gas and electricity network companies have come together to launch the Be Winter Ready campaign. The campaign aims to help the public better-prepare for power cuts and gas emergencies that may result from bad winter weather.

To Be Winter Ready, you should:

  1. Know your free emergency numbers – in a power cut dial 105 or, for a gas emergency, dial 0800 111999.
  2. Prepare your home – keep a torch handy and get your appliances serviced by a Gas Safe registered engineer to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Vulnerable households can get extra support by signing up to the Priority Services Register. Contact your gas or electricity network to find out more. Visit www.energynetworks.org to find out who your network operator is.
  3. Keep your eyes open – keep an eye on the weather forecast and, if you have a power cut or a gas emergency, check on your neighbours.

Improved Oakham High Street with one-way traffic flow

Designs and proposed surfacing materials for an improved Oakham High Street with one-way traffic flow will go on display at Oakham Library from 14th November to 15th December 2017 as part of the town centre regeneration scheme being led by Rutland County Council.

The display will include design drawings, showing work to date on the proposed new highway layout and expanded pedestrian areas, as well the location of parking spaces, cycle routes and delivery bays for businesses.

In particular, there will be an opportunity to see and comment on the types of materials being considered for pavements, kerbs and road surfaces, along with examples of new street furniture, such as benches and lamp posts.

As part of the detailed design phase for the Town Centre Improvement Scheme, we have already begun approaching businesses, traders and other stakeholders directly for their feedback on the latest detail designs. People will also be able to view the scheme designs and comment online from 14th November by visiting: www.rutland.gov.uk/oakhamtowncentre

The information gathered will then be used to help create a final detailed design, which will be presented to Full Council for approval in March 2018.

For more information about the regeneration of Oakham Town Centre, I would encourage you to visit: www.rutland.gov.uk/oakhamtowncentre
Alternatively, please contact our project team by emailing: oakhamtowncentre@rutland.gov.uk

Military history talk at the Fox with Penny Burton

I’m a local historian (until recently I was living in the village) and I’m doing a series of military history talks at the Fox. The next one is 6th December and I didn’t know if you could include this?

Tickets are £5 and available at the bar. It starts at 7pm and the talk lasts about 1 hour with questions afterwards and a chance to view my collection of wwi artifacts.

Many thanks in advance,
Penny Burton

Christmas Flower Arranging Workshop

Sally Lambert has again kindly agreed to run a workshop on Sat 25th November from 10am – 1pm @the Community Centre, where she will guide us in making our own wreath, and other arrangements.

Cost is £5 per person, which includes tea/coffee & a mince pie.

You will need to bring any equipment you have – oasis, secateurs, vase/container you intend to use, pine cones, ribbons, decorations – plus foliage & flowers. Prunings of woody clematis stems, dogwoods etc make a great basis for wreaths – we all share bits and pieces too.

Please book your place with Katy Ellis on 01780 722173 as soon as possible.
