Love and Mercy

Just to remind you that these damp and gloomy January days can be cheered up next Wednesday (13/01/16) by coming along to the Town Hall to watch Love & Mercy.  For those who might think this is mainly a vehicle for some great Beach Boys tracks, do have a look at our excellent website (uppinghamfilms.co.uk) to view the trailer and you will see that there is a strong dramatic element to be found as well.  It has had some brilliant reviews.  As ever, the doors will be open from 7pm with the film starting at 7.30 and we shall look forward to greeting you and wishing you a slightly belated happy New Year.  As always, bring a bottle and a cushion and anything else that makes the evening fun.  We shall do some home-baked nibbles as ever.

Just in case I get sidetracked by sunshine next month (hurrah!), I’ll mention now that we will be showing Suffragette on Feb 10th.  I saw it last week and thought it was really excellent.  March 9th will be Brooklyn – again, great reviews – and then on April we are not, as a one off, able to have the Town Hall on the second Wednesday of the month so will instead be showing the wonderful Lady in the Van on April 6th (the 1st Wednesday).  All dates for your 2016 diaries.

Testament of Youth

I know this reminder for Uppingham Film Night is a bit earlier than usual, but we’ve had a change of plan/flash of inspiration!  The film we planned to show on November 11th has been delayed for release (don’t worry, it will appear later) and we realised that this was the perfect opportunity to really remember Armistice Day by showing the wonderful Testament of Youth which was released last year  (but too late for a November showing).  A powerful drama about Vera Brittain, who left Oxford to nurse during WW1 in order to help in the action along with her brother and lover.  As many of you will know, there is a strong connection with Uppingham School. And if you’ve seen it, you will know it is very well worth seeing again.

As ever, £5 tickets will be on sale at the Falcon, but otherwise just turn up at the Town Hall at 7pm for a 7.30 start.  We will have our usual home-baked nibbles, and do bring along a bottle of whatever makes the film even better for you (& maybe a cushion to pad the chairs if preferred).  We will have a Poppy collection tin on prominent but optional display!

We would love to make this a real testament to remembrance, so do please round up friends and family and come along and join us. And if you could forward this email around that would be great. See you there! Susie

A thank you from Nic for supporting cycle4mango

nic lands endI have now turned the corner and am now in the home straight in terms of fund raising – I’ve raised £8000 of my target of £8644 – (£8644 representing £1 for every orphan who is registered with the Mango Tree Orphan Support Programme).

I would like to thank the very kind supporters of my ride in the village who took an interest in the ride, and helped me towards that target. I am especially grateful to Steve Marson who gave me so much technical support and advice before I set off!

The Mango Tree has been blessed by a film director who is a keen supporter and who went out to Kenya to visit the work of the charity and made a film for us.
