Our current Problem Solving Plans are tackling burglary related crime in Ketton and also hare coursing along the corridor villages along the A47.

There has been an increase in reports of hare coursing in the past 2 weeks around the Wing to Glaston area and the Barrowden to Seaton area.

We are carrying out high visibility patrols in all the above locations to target offenders & liaising with neighbouring forces. Currently there is a matrix warning sign on Luffenham road, Ketton warning motorists of police operations in the area.

As you can see from the above crime for the last month, there have been 4 shed breaks. Please review your home security and if you need any advice, please feel free to contact me.

Remember we currently sell padlock alarms for £8.50, which would be ideal for a shed.

Women in World War 1

On Tuesday January 12th there will be a talk at The Rutland Museum, Oakham on the subject of Women in World War 1.  In particular this talk features the story of Elsie Fenwick who lived in North Luffenham and is buried in the churchyard.

The talk starts at 7-30 pm with refreshments from 6-45 pm

Love and Mercy

Just to remind you that these damp and gloomy January days can be cheered up next Wednesday (13/01/16) by coming along to the Town Hall to watch Love & Mercy.  For those who might think this is mainly a vehicle for some great Beach Boys tracks, do have a look at our excellent website (uppinghamfilms.co.uk) to view the trailer and you will see that there is a strong dramatic element to be found as well.  It has had some brilliant reviews.  As ever, the doors will be open from 7pm with the film starting at 7.30 and we shall look forward to greeting you and wishing you a slightly belated happy New Year.  As always, bring a bottle and a cushion and anything else that makes the evening fun.  We shall do some home-baked nibbles as ever.

Just in case I get sidetracked by sunshine next month (hurrah!), I’ll mention now that we will be showing Suffragette on Feb 10th.  I saw it last week and thought it was really excellent.  March 9th will be Brooklyn – again, great reviews – and then on April we are not, as a one off, able to have the Town Hall on the second Wednesday of the month so will instead be showing the wonderful Lady in the Van on April 6th (the 1st Wednesday).  All dates for your 2016 diaries.

North Luffenham ballerina on front of “Rutland Living”

“Residents of North Luffenham will recently have received their copy of RUTLAND LIVING.  The front cover of that Magazine shows Nicky Morris (of North Luffenham) leading her dance class and the article inside headed “Silver Swans” tells of the excellent work she has done in bringing ballet / dance to the more mature ladies.  Nicky is a highly talented ballerina and is now making dance available to a wider audience.  We in North Luffenham should be very proud of her”

Security advice at Christmas

The following security advice has come from our local Police Officer

Dear all,

Please, on the run up to Christmas make sure that you are security conscious. Please follow the following advice to make sure you have a Happy Christmas and a crime free one at that.

Most burglaries are carried out on the spur of the moment by opportunist thieves- they may see an open window or an easy entry point and take their chance.

Hiding spare keys outside your home is an open invitation to thieves. Avoid leaving keys in an obvious place near doors and windows.

When you go out, make sure you lock the doors and close your windows, even if you are going out for a short time.

Visible burglar alarms and security Lights are good deterrents to potential thieves.

Expensive items such as jewellery are attractive to thieves especially if they are on view from the outside. Try to ensure that valuable items cannot be seen through windows. When buying new items like X boxes, tablets, DVD players or blu rays, don’t leave the empty boxes on display near your bins.

Post coding your property can deter burglars because it makes it harder for thieves to sell. The police have a much better chance of returning property to its rightful owner following a burglary if it is marked.

Make a list of all valuable items and keep it somewhere. Take pictures of all valuable items like jewellery and silverware and write down the serial numbers of your TV, video, hi-fi, home computer and camera equipment to help the police identify them should they be stolen and recovered.

Taking steps to increase security of your home will reduce the chances of being burgled, but should you return home and notice signs of a break in, don’t go in or call out- there is a possibility the intruder may still be inside. Go to a neighbour’s house to call the police or use your mobile.

Have a great Christmas and New Year.

Regards

TTRO-15-100 Station Road South Luffenham NOTICE

A cautionary tale from our local police

Please see the note below from Paul Le Pla our Police Constable in South Rutland

There has been a recent series of incidents in Northants, whereby fraudsters either phone or attend the home address of elderly members of the public, claiming to be police officers.

The fake officer/s will claim that they are investigating a fraud which they believe the elderly person to be a victim of. The fake officer/s will then request the bank cards and personal identification numbers (PIN) of the victim and claim these are needed for investigation purposes. If the first contact was made by a phone call, the fake officer/s will tell the victim that someone will be over to collect the evidence. In one case the victim was instructed to attend their local bank and withdraw all of the money from their account. The suspect was left alone in the victim’s house whilst the victim carried out the instructions.

Protect Yourself

*       Before letting anyone into your home who claims to be from any law enforcement agency, ask to see their identity card and check it by calling 101.
*       Ask if they can attend at a pre-arranged time when a family member or friend can also be present.
*       If you receive a phone call from a police officer, ask for their name and force and tell them you will call them back. Wait a few minutes and then use 101 to call them back through their force’s switchboard and verify their identity.
*       The Police will never ask for your PIN or passwords. Do not give this information to anyone.
*       The Police will never request that you withdraw/transfer any money to them.

If you believe that you have been a victim of fraud you can report it online http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud or by telephone 0300 123 2040.

Testament of Youth

I know this reminder for Uppingham Film Night is a bit earlier than usual, but we’ve had a change of plan/flash of inspiration!  The film we planned to show on November 11th has been delayed for release (don’t worry, it will appear later) and we realised that this was the perfect opportunity to really remember Armistice Day by showing the wonderful Testament of Youth which was released last year  (but too late for a November showing).  A powerful drama about Vera Brittain, who left Oxford to nurse during WW1 in order to help in the action along with her brother and lover.  As many of you will know, there is a strong connection with Uppingham School. And if you’ve seen it, you will know it is very well worth seeing again.

As ever, £5 tickets will be on sale at the Falcon, but otherwise just turn up at the Town Hall at 7pm for a 7.30 start.  We will have our usual home-baked nibbles, and do bring along a bottle of whatever makes the film even better for you (& maybe a cushion to pad the chairs if preferred).  We will have a Poppy collection tin on prominent but optional display!

We would love to make this a real testament to remembrance, so do please round up friends and family and come along and join us. And if you could forward this email around that would be great. See you there! Susie

Good Security Advice!

Our local police officer PC Paul Le Pla has asked me to post the advice below

HOME SECURITY ADVICE – WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PROTECT YOUR OUR PROPERTY AND YOUR ENVIRONMENT

Oakham Police have a front enquiry desk situated at Rutland County Council offices, Catmose Street, Oakham.

From them you can get –

•             UV security marker pens

•             Alarm padlocks for £8-50.

•             Smart Water for £15 (FORENSIC DNA PROPERTY MARKING)

•             Timer switches – Ensure you have at least one timer – maybe even two. One for a lamp and one for a radio tuned to a talk programme.

•             Take advantage of their Cremark overt marking pens (£12) – ensuring everything is marked including things kept in your garage and shed – mowers, bicycles etc., in fact anything you would like back following a burglary – the Police will be happy to mark bicycles etc.

Other things you can do for your security

•             Avoid leaving your curtains half closed or fully closed during daytime hours particularly when you go away

•             Get a neighbour to park their car on your driveway while you are away

•             If any door to door sellers come to your property, so no thanks and call 101 to let the police know they are in the village. Door to door sellers are known to be checking who are in and who are out, who has a dog, who has an alarm, who appears to be living on their own.  Some are connected to criminal activity and the purpose of their visit could be to identify who are the easiest targets to burgle later.

•             Stand outside your property. Imagine you have lost your keys and think about how you would gain entry.  You may have high fences and a locked gate but are your bins outside – would you for instance use the bins as a way of getting over the fence?  Place them at the back of your property.  Can you be seen?  Most entries occur at the rear of a property.

•             What about your front door? Do you have a security chain?  Do you use it?  Do you have a five lever mortice lock?  Do you use it?

•             If a utility person (Gas/ Water board) calls at your door requesting entrance to check a meter, water pressure etc., would you just let them in? How often do you ask for proof of who they are?  How would you know if it were legitimate?  If you are unsure simply advise them, you are calling to verify who they are and close the door while you do it?  Always ensure your rear doors and windows are locked.  Most distraction burglaries take place with an accomplice entering the back while the householder is engaged in conversation at the front!

•             Protecting your goods by registering the serial numbers electronically – visit imobilise.com. Register to protect it!  Television, phones, tablets, in fact anything with a serial no.

Scam letters – Alert from police

Please see below a note I have received from PC le Pla our local Police officer

Dear all,
I have been contacted by a local resident who received a letter purporting to be from a Chinese bank about a possible relative who has died leaving $ 18.5 million. As you would expect, they wanted him to get in touch with them and open a bank account etc.

THIS IS A SCAM!!!! Unfortunately, it is a common one.

Please send out alerts, warning people of this.

I will inform Trading Standards of this.

A thank you from Nic for supporting cycle4mango

nic lands endI have now turned the corner and am now in the home straight in terms of fund raising – I’ve raised £8000 of my target of £8644 – (£8644 representing £1 for every orphan who is registered with the Mango Tree Orphan Support Programme).

I would like to thank the very kind supporters of my ride in the village who took an interest in the ride, and helped me towards that target. I am especially grateful to Steve Marson who gave me so much technical support and advice before I set off!

The Mango Tree has been blessed by a film director who is a keen supporter and who went out to Kenya to visit the work of the charity and made a film for us.

Vulcan Bomber – last flight over Rutland Water on Sunday

XH558 sunday approx route timesThe aviation enthusiasts amongst you will be aware of the last flying Vulcan bomber, known as XH558.

This has been kept flying for the last few years by a private charity, based at Robin Hood Airport, Doncaster.

2015 is the last year it will be able to fly, due to the difficulties in continuing the required support for a complex aircraft.

The Vulcan will be undertaking a “last hurrah” flight around the UK this weekend. The Southern loop of this flight will take place on Sunday, 11th October, and will include Rutland Water as a waypoint on the trip around the country.

There will be no display as such, but it will be overhead the reservoir for a period of time

Timings are still to be confirmed, but further details can be found on the Vulcan Trusts website.

17th Annual Autumn Show

Results from Annual Autumn Show 2015

The North Luffenham Garden Club held its 17th Annual Autumn Show on Sunday 13th September in the village Community Centre and school hall

Last year was a bumper year, and we knew it would be a hard act to follow.  Indeed there were fewer entrants (32 in total) and entries (270) overall, but the
hall was still filled with a glorious array of fresh and home produce, flowers and crafts.
Village shows such as ours are an important tradition both as a community event and as a celebration of the traditional pastimes and skills in growing, making
and baking. Jim Bolton, the Club’s president echoed this sentiment in his speech, emphasising the importance of passing on and encouraging these skills in the
younger generations.

It is fair to say we were deeply disappointed by the lack of children’s entries.  However the boost in popularity of flower arrangements continued with the new
prize of an RHS Grenfell Medal was awarded for a second year, and for the first time we also awarded the RHS Banksian medal for most points won in the home-
grown fruit and vegetables categories.

Hopefully some people will have been encouraged to have a go themselves next year – ANYONE CAN ENTER NOT JUST MEMBERS, and we can drum up some enthusiasm from
the younger generation.  We would like to make some changes to the children’s classes and would be grateful for suggestions at any time.
A big thank you to everyone who made the effort to put in entries, and particularly to the Garden Club committee and a small army of volunteers who helped the
day run so smoothly.
