South Luffenham Ghost Story

NEW PERSPECTIVES THEATRE – OH WHISTLE AND I’LL COME TO YOU (based on the classic ghost story by M. R. James)

Tickets are now available for the New Perspectives Theatre Company’s showing of Oh Whistle and I’ll Come to You which will be in South Luffenham Village Hall at 7.30pm on Tuesday 6th December.

The tickets cost £10 each and can be purchased from Malcolm, phone 720687 or Noel, phone 720112.

Suitable for audience age 14+years.  Running time: 90 mins + interval

A prying hand brings forth from centuries of sleep… a mysterious thing… it seems a whistle… and on it engraved… these ominous words… WHO’S THAT COMING

Professor Parkins takes a room at The Globe.

Away from Cambridge, a peaceful coastal retreat with minimal interruption from the inn’s young valet should be perfect for writing. But on taking a walk to explore the area, Parkins finds an ancient whistle with a soul-stirring inscription. Choosing to ignore its warning, the professor is soon to discover he is not alone…

Widely regarded as the father of the modern ghost story, M. R. James’ eerie tale is re-imagined by David Rudkin, described by the Observer as ‘Britain’s greatest living dramatic poet’ into this new Christmas chiller. This production marks David Rudkin’s 80th year and the 80th anniversary of the death of M.R. James.

These events are sponsored by Centre Stage which subsidise the cost and make live theatre affordable for local communities.

Our other Problem solving Plans are –

1 – Targeting hare coursing  along the A47 corridor from Uppingham to Tixover & parts of the north beat area from Langham towards the A1. Last month, members of the public reported to police numerous reports of hare coursing. As a result several people and vehicles have been identified as taking part in this illegal activity.

I would encourage you all to report any persons you suspect are involved in hare coursing to police on 101, when out and about.

Toxocara Canis

Perhaps better known as dog roundworm the embryonated eggs of which can be ingested by humans causing disease called toxocariasis. Young children are particularly at risk as it is picked up by ingestion of eggs from infected dog faeces. It is fortunately rare but rare things do happen. Dog mess is not only unpleasant but a potential source of an unpleasant infection.

A resident, upset that there was dog mess present where her children were playing on The Oval, contacted a Parish Councillor recently. There are a number of Poop Scoop bins provided and these are emptied on a regular basis. The vast majority of dog owners conscientiously clean up after their dogs and please continue to be vigilant when walking your dog. If users of The Oval see an infringement it would help if they point out that there are bins provided.

Holiday Security

Please see below for latest security advice from PC Paul Le Pla

Most burglaries occur when there is no-one home, so whether you are leaving the house for a few minutes, the day or a fortnight, remember to shut and lock all your windows and doors.

By now most of us are in a habit of making sure windows and doors are closed and locked on our vehicles and houses when we leave them, but in the excitement of going away, we can sometimes forget. If you have locks on your windows and a burglar alarm installed to your property it is important you use them.

It is advised you always try to make your home appear occupied. Here are some steps you can take to ensure this:

Get a friend, neighbour or relative to keep an eye on your house or flat. Even the smallest of jobs such as collecting post from the letterbox, sweeping up leaves, putting dustbins out and even mowing your lawn, can make it seem as though someone is home.
Cancel deliveries of milk and newspapers while you are away, as a clutter of these around your front door, becomes a clear sign that nobody is home.
Invest in some automatic time switches, which switch lights and radios on and off at set times.
Never leave blinds or curtains closed as this makes it obvious the property is empty during the day.
Regards

Room

Just a reminder to let you know that our next film is Room, and as usual it is on the second Wednesday of the month which is July 13th – no more Wimbledon catch-up to watch!

Room has been described as ‘a heartfelt, Golden Globe-winning performance powers this gripping drama’ (Guardian), and ‘it is hard to think of a movie adaptation of a book that feels truer and more loyal to its source than Room’.  You can always check the trailer on our website (Uppinghamfilms.co.uk)

As ever, we will open the Town Hall doors at 7pm for a 7.30 start and tickets will be sold on the door (£5). There will be some home-baking and a warm welcome. Do feel free to bring a bottle and a cushion.  We look forward to seeing you there. (And if you are an enthusiastic local and feel like spending a bit more time in the Town Hall, the Council is looking for a new member – contact the Town Clerk on townclerk@uppinghamtowncouncil.co.uk in the next couple of weeks).

Meantime, enjoy the touch of summer that is creeping in!  Susie

Charity Air Rifle Competition

Take part in a Charity Air Rifle Competition this Sunday at Digby Farm in aid of the Royal British Legion

Hunter Field Target, also known as HFT is a popular target shooting sport that combines the air gun disciplines of target shooting with hunting scenarios. This is predominately an outdoor sport, shot with air rifles rated at a maximum of 12ft.lbf. The aim of the competition is to ‘knock down’ as many of the 30 targets as possible, which are placed in certain positions to simulate different hunting scenarios.

This Sunday 10th July, the UK Association of HFT is holding its Poppy Shoot, set in a field of Christmas trees at Digby Farm, Station Road. There are several spare rifles available to give an opportunity for anyone interested to come and have a go. The cost is £10 and all proceeds go to the Royal British Legion. The ground opens at 8am, and shooting starts at approximately 10.15am. There will be refreshments and toilet on site. Please find more details here

https://www.sites.google.com/site/ukahft/ukahft-dates/2016-poppy-shoot

If you are interested, you must pre-book with Jason Ellis on 01780 722173 (leave a message, or ring early evening).

Poignant Reminder – the tenor bell tolls 100 times

As an act of commemoration at 7.30am this Friday morning, 1st July 2016, one half-muffled tenor bell will toll 100 times at St John the Baptist Church.

At precisely that time 100 years ago, a whistle was blown, the men went over the top of the dug outs at the Somme and walked towards enemy lines, starting the bloodiest battle that the British Army ever fought.

On that day alone, the 1st July 1916, 60,000 soldiers were killed, injured or declared missing.

The centenary of the battle provides an opportunity to commemorate the service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives at the Somme and to reflect on the human cost of war.
