The latest news from the North Luffenham Camera Club

North Luffenham Camera Club

The meeting on September 16th was well attended and we all enjoyed a very informative talk, given by Robin Stewart, lecturer, caterer and photographer.  Robin showed slides  of how methods of depicting Food has evolved over the ages, in Paintings and Photography.

His photos, with his own preparations to be used in promotions and magazines, were accompanied by descriptions of the use of backgrounds, lighting, lenses etc.  There was very little use of post production enhancement, preferring to use histograms and computer screens to adjust settings.
Robin ended by giving  us a demo of how he would set up and photograph a composition, using some delicious cupcakes made by a member of the Club.

I expect that everyone has taken away some ideas for a much more informed way of  looking at and setting up compositions. So – Food  will be the theme for the next meeting’s Photo Display on November 18th.

Camera Club Meeting 20th May 2014

At the last meeting before the summer break, we had a display of the current Theme photos – A Good Day Out.  Andrew James gave advice and comments on these, which included the Brancaster Outing pictures.

The next get together will be an Exhibition to coincide with the Open Garden at Acre End on July 13th, in the School Hall. This will be a display of our favourite photos on all subjects.

At the next meeting on Sept 16th, the speaker will be Robin Stewart who will give a talk on Food Photography. Further details will be posted nearer the time.

Brancaster Staithe Camera Club Outing on Sunday May 11th

A group from the club enjoyed a wonderful “day of weather” Travelling from Luffenham at 7am and returning early evening, we went through down pouring rain, gusts of wind, and sand blows and even intervals of sunshine.

Andrew James led the group to different locations and projects throughout the day, including a local pub lunch. The thought of sitting in cars eating our sandwiches didn’t have a great appeal!

We began at the Staithe beach with all manner of boats, fishing boats, rowing boats which looked as if they had been there for a few generations, elegant yachts and all manner of outworn machinery, ropes and chains. Stacks of lobster pots and piles of junk brought a different dimension to our pictures – certainly out of our comfort zone.

Moving along the beach to the breakwater, there were spectacular storm clouds, windsurfers and blowing sand.

The dunes along the coast at Brancaster contained many half buried beach huts and with the marram grass sparkling in the sunshine resulted in great pictures.

Andrew gave lots of help individually, as well as group teach-ins, we all found the day so rewarding. Grateful thanks go to him from all – it was a splendid balance of learning and fun.

Although it sounds as though the weather was against us, we have all done the “beach in sunshine” photos. This Sunday brought lots of dramatic scenes and extended our knowledge of how to set up for them.

Some of the photos will be displayed at the next Camera Club meeting on Tuesday, May 20th at 8pm in the Community Centre, North Luffenham School, the theme being A Good Day Out. Everyone is very welcome to come along.

November Camera Club Meeting Notes

The November meeting saw the return of speaker Andrew James.

Andrew has many years experience as a photojournalist and is now branching out into his own business.

He showed a tremendous variety of his photographs which were discussed with the theme of Composition.

He gave us a photographers eye view, breaking down each one into the elements which had “worked”.

There were many questions from the floor and we extended our usual two hours!

All interests and individual queries were covered and we finished the evening with Andrew looking over our own pictures of “Natural Patterns” and giving us pointers on what had worked and what we could do to add impact.

Photographic Exhibition

The members held a Photographic Exhibition in the School Hall on July 14th to coincide with NGS Open Day at Mima and Jim Bolton’s garden.

We displayed all sizes and all subjects of our favourite pictures and there was a steady stream of visitors between 11am and 6pm.

The School very kindly lent us their display boards, as did the School Photographer who happened to be in the right place….

We were so lucky with our weather again, and we received many favourable comments on the display.

Thanks go to the many members involved.

Exton Outing Photo Collection

The North Luffenham Camera Club recently visited Exton to photograph the village and the gallery below includes a selection of photos taken by the club members.

Camera Club Meeting Notes – 21st May 2013

Members showed their photographs from the Exton outing evening on May 7th, with each commenting on their own photos; why they had chosen that particular view and how they felt it had turned out.

The themes for this meeting , Flora and Fauna plus Signs of the Zodiac were displayed over the coffee break and allowed for plenty of discussion time.

What make a Good Photograph? – Ideas on this subject were followed by a listing of the points looked for by judges of Photography Competitions.

The percentage weightings given to:

  1. Technical aspect
  2. Content
  3. Message/story – were felt to be the opposite of those expected!

According to the North and East Midlands Federation of Photographers, their judges place much more emphasis on the Message rather than the Technical aspect of the picture.

Dates Reminders:

  • 13th July – a “mini-outing” to Rockingham Game and Country Fair for those members who wish to have a photography focus during the Summer.
  • 14th July – an Exhibition in the School Hall, to coincide with the opening of Jim and Mima Bolton’s garden for the NGS scheme, when teas will be provided in the Community Centre.

Next Camera Club meeting is on 17th September at 8pm in the Community Centre. This will include choosing photographs for this years Calendar.

Photographic Outing to Exton

An Exton Thatched Cottage

An Exton Thatched Cottage

North Luffenham Camera Club Outing to Exton – 7th May 2013.

The choice of Exton for this outing was splendid – and it could not have been better with the weather! Sunny and still – how lucky, as Tuesday night was the changing point from our sunny spell.

Ten members turned out and spent an hour and half taking photographs, around this typically English village – thatched cottages and village green.

We were able to include photos of a local lady with her white horse and two tiny white ponies.

Also a member of the group was invited to photograph a private wild garden- carpets of forget-me-nots and primroses.

The evening finished with a splendid supper in the pub.

I expect we will see some cracking photos at the next meeting on 21st May – 8pm in the NL Community Centre, with possible contenders for the next calendar.
