North Luffenham Garden Club meeting Thursday 12 April at 7.30pm

This month on Thursday 12 April at 7.30pm in the Community Centre we will be welcoming Neil Tyers from the National Auricula and Primula Society. A specialist grower of Auriculas, he will give an illustrated talk on all aspects of growing and keeping these wonderful plants.

For our final speaker of the season, on Thursday 10 May, we will have a presentation from a previous visitor to our garden club, Geoff Hodge, looking in detail at scented plants in the garden. Geoff is a prolific garden writer, with a wide area of knowledge which he loves to pass onto other gardeners.

All welcome, non members pay £2.

POPPIES FOR REMEMBRANCE

This year on 11th November 2018 it will be the centenary of the ending of the Great War after which the poppy became the symbol of Remembrance.

To mark this there are many schemes using poppies.

Here in the village , our Rector, Pippa would like a scheme for knitting/ crocheting poppies for a Cascade of flowers outside the church. This should be beautiful provided enough poppies are made! This project will be spearheaded by Fay Cummings and further details will follow after Easter.

In Oakham, it is hoped to replicate a version from the Tower of London with clay poppies at the castle.

I would like to set up an opportunity in the village for the clay poppy scheme ( open to men, women and older children ) and hope this would be one Saturday in June.

Apparently during a session of about 2 hours , it takes each person about 15 MINUTES to make a poppy. These will then be taken away for firing. All tuition is given. Artistic talent not needed.

Cost is zero although donations are welcome.

I need about 20 expressions of interest to set this up.

So if you would be interested please contact me by email : hilary.daintith@gmail.com

Fraud Alert

A Fraud MO is being conducted against elderly vulnerable people involving a male caller, described by various victims as having an Indian or foreign accent, contacting the vulnerable person knowing their name, address and bank in order to try to get them to withdraw money from the bank.
Offences have continued across the force with a potential further 14 incidents being called into the Police over the last few weeks. This is likely to be higher in number due to some incidents being reported directly to Action Fraud and others being unreported.
A couple of variations to the method have been observed, these being the victim being persuaded to transfer their money into the suspects bank account and also where the scam initially began as a BT/TalkTalk representative rather than from the Police/bank.

ST GEORGE’S BARRACKS – IMPORTANT UPDATE

Please find attached a progress report from the Joint Edith Weston / North Luffenham Working Group, which explains what the Working Group has been doing to date and what its future tasks are.

At the Focus Group meetings held on 29th Jan we were advised by the County Council that the current proposals would see both a development of 1,500 – 3,000 homes on the Western end (Edith Weston) of the site, and in addition the development of a substantial part of the Eastern (North Luffenham) end of site for the extraction of limestone. The report attached includes a map highlighting the area designated for mineral extraction.

The aim of the Working Group is initially to gather the information necessary to influence the development of the site. The first step in this will be to present a paper highlighting our concerns to the County Council in early March before any decisions are made.

Avian Bird Flu Confirmed in Rutland

It has been confirmed by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), that Avian Influenza (bird flu) has been identified in the wild bird population in Rutland.

An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone currently applies to everyone who keeps poultry or captive birds in England. Anyone who keeps poultry or birds must adhere to strict biosecurity requirements, whether they have commercial flocks or just a few birds in a garden flock.

The prevention zone means bird keepers across the country must:

  • Ensure the areas where birds are kept are unattractive to wild birds, for example by netting ponds, and by removing wild bird food sources
  • Feed and water your birds in enclosed areas to discourage wild birds
  • Minimise movement in and out of bird enclosures
  • Clean and disinfect footwear and keep areas where birds live clean and tidy
  • Reduce any existing contamination by cleansing and disinfecting concrete areas, and fencing off wet or boggy areas

Further information about Defra’s biosecurity requirements can be found on the GOV.UK website.

If anyone suspects disease in their flock or finds dead wild birds such as wild ducks, wild geese, swans, gulls or birds of prey, they must report this to Defra.

You can contact Defra’s helpline by calling: 03459 33 55 77

Public Health England advises that the risk to public health from avian influenza is very low.

As a precaution, people should avoid contact with sick, dying or dead poultry or wild birds, avoid contact with surfaces contaminated with bird faeces and avoid untreated feathers.

Further updates on avian influenza in England can be found online at: www.gov.uk/government/news/avian-influenza-bird-flu-in-winter-2017-to-2018
