Holiday Security

Please see below for latest security advice from PC Paul Le Pla

Most burglaries occur when there is no-one home, so whether you are leaving the house for a few minutes, the day or a fortnight, remember to shut and lock all your windows and doors.

By now most of us are in a habit of making sure windows and doors are closed and locked on our vehicles and houses when we leave them, but in the excitement of going away, we can sometimes forget. If you have locks on your windows and a burglar alarm installed to your property it is important you use them.

It is advised you always try to make your home appear occupied. Here are some steps you can take to ensure this:

Get a friend, neighbour or relative to keep an eye on your house or flat. Even the smallest of jobs such as collecting post from the letterbox, sweeping up leaves, putting dustbins out and even mowing your lawn, can make it seem as though someone is home.
Cancel deliveries of milk and newspapers while you are away, as a clutter of these around your front door, becomes a clear sign that nobody is home.
Invest in some automatic time switches, which switch lights and radios on and off at set times.
Never leave blinds or curtains closed as this makes it obvious the property is empty during the day.

Room

Just a reminder to let you know that our next film is Room, and as usual it is on the second Wednesday of the month which is July 13th – no more Wimbledon catch-up to watch!

Room has been described as ‘a heartfelt, Golden Globe-winning performance powers this gripping drama’ (Guardian), and ‘it is hard to think of a movie adaptation of a book that feels truer and more loyal to its source than Room’.  You can always check the trailer on our website (Uppinghamfilms.co.uk)

As ever, we will open the Town Hall doors at 7pm for a 7.30 start and tickets will be sold on the door (£5). There will be some home-baking and a warm welcome. Do feel free to bring a bottle and a cushion.  We look forward to seeing you there. (And if you are an enthusiastic local and feel like spending a bit more time in the Town Hall, the Council is looking for a new member – contact the Town Clerk on townclerk@uppinghamtowncouncil.co.uk in the next couple of weeks).

Meantime, enjoy the touch of summer that is creeping in!  Susie

Charity Air Rifle Competition

Take part in a Charity Air Rifle Competition this Sunday at Digby Farm in aid of the Royal British Legion

Hunter Field Target, also known as HFT is a popular target shooting sport that combines the air gun disciplines of target shooting with hunting scenarios. This is predominately an outdoor sport, shot with air rifles rated at a maximum of 12ft.lbf. The aim of the competition is to ‘knock down’ as many of the 30 targets as possible, which are placed in certain positions to simulate different hunting scenarios.

This Sunday 10th July, the UK Association of HFT is holding its Poppy Shoot, set in a field of Christmas trees at Digby Farm, Station Road. There are several spare rifles available to give an opportunity for anyone interested to come and have a go. The cost is £10 and all proceeds go to the Royal British Legion. The ground opens at 8am, and shooting starts at approximately 10.15am. There will be refreshments and toilet on site. Please find more details here

If you are interested, you must pre-book with Jason Ellis on 01780 722173 (leave a message, or ring early evening).

Poignant Reminder – the tenor bell tolls 100 times

As an act of commemoration at 7.30am this Friday morning, 1st July 2016, one half-muffled tenor bell will toll 100 times at St John the Baptist Church.

At precisely that time 100 years ago, a whistle was blown, the men went over the top of the dug outs at the Somme and walked towards enemy lines, starting the bloodiest battle that the British Army ever fought.

On that day alone, the 1st July 1916, 60,000 soldiers were killed, injured or declared missing.

The centenary of the battle provides an opportunity to commemorate the service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives at the Somme and to reflect on the human cost of war.

Anyone missing a grey wheelie bin?

A full grey wheelie bin has been discovered in Old School Close. It does not belong to any of the houses there.  It looks like a new bin so may have been recently ordered. It is thought that it may belong to a property in the Deweys Close/Butt Lane area of North Luffenham.  If any householder thinks it belongs to them the bin is currently reposing on the pavement outside No. 21 Church Street and can be collected from there

As you can see we are still being targeted for Burglary related crime including sheds, garages & stables, whereby power tools and gardening equipment are stolen. We are targeting offenders, carrying out police patrols in the areas affected and liaising with neighbouring police forces.

We are urging residents to review their home security, especially their sheds and outbuildings.

Our Problems solving plans of tackling hare coursing along the A47 corridor villages and tackling the increased threat of lead thefts from church roofs have now been closed.

We have visited all Rutland Churches and carried out risk assessments on their security to reduce the threat and continue to patrol identified high risk Churches.

Last week there was a lead theft seminar held at St Mary’s Church, Melton Mowbray, which was well attended and discussed the current threat levels and crime prevention.

Since the beginning of April 2016, there has now only been 1 report of hare coursing on the Rutland South beat reported to police. Incidents relating to hare coursing have also dropped off on the neighbouring Rutland north beat. Hare coursing historically drops off this time of year when the crops in fields begin to grow, restricting hare coursing.

This problem profile is seasonal, occurring from November to April and is dependant on conditions and weather.
There have been no prosecutions specifically linked to hare coursers in Rutland during the problem profile period this year, but there has been vehicle seizures and numerous stop checks and Intelligence obtained. Rural Watch and Farm Watch have been utilised as has social media such as Facebook and twitter, to keep the rural / farming community informed.
