Message from RCC re Fraud Alert

The Council has taken a large number of calls from residents who say they’ve been contacted by scammers posing as Council officers and asking for bank details over the phone. In some cases they are also claiming to work for the resident’s bank to extract this information.

Our advice to resident’s is as follows and we would appreciate it if you could help to share these messages online, via social media or any other channels at your disposal:

  • Rutland County Council will never contact residents out of the blue to ask for their bank details
  • Anyone who does get a call from someone claiming to be from the Council and asking for bank details should hang up straight away – do not give out any personal information
  • They should then report the call to the national fraud reporting centre, Action Fraud on: 0300 123 2040 or online at: www.actionfraud.police.uk

We have already been in touch with our pool of local media and Leicestershire Police, who are supporting this.

Lastly, there is a news item on our website if you would like to link to this in your local communications: www.rutland.gov.uk/my-council/council-news/residents-warned-about-phone-scam.

Potential Scam

A parishioner recently had a phone call from a call centre – the number shown was   01332913168.

The caller tried to give the impression that they were from some sort of official ‘emergency services response’ organisation, with teams touring the area to ‘explain’ how the emergency services prioritise and respond to emergency calls.  Ambulance and police were mentioned.

At first, the parishoner thought that it might have something to do with the area emergency response planning which the PC has had some involvement with, and so they did not immediately hang up.  However, it quickly became apparent that this was a home alarm systems sales pitch.

Please be aware of this type of approach if you receive a similar call.

ST GEORGE’S BARRACKS – REVIEW MEETING – 22 JUN 18

On 22 Jun 18, Sir Alan Duncan MP Chaired a meeting to review the St George’s Barracks Masterplan. Invited were representatives of Rutland County Council, their consultants, RegenCo, the Ministry of Defence (Defence Infrastructure Organisations), County Councillors and representatives of a number of Parish Councils.

Though not an official record of the meeting, which has yet to be published, please find attached a summary of the notes that I made at that meeting. My personal perceptions are included in the final paragraph of the document.

The most important outcome of the meeting was an agreement to form an Advisory Group to work with RCC to help inform the Barrack Development Plan.
