November meeting of the Camera club

Simon Lee gave us a talk and showed photos, for our last meeting this year.
Some of the photos looked very exciting – not to say dangerous- to capture! Being in front of, or alongside, speeding cars and motorbikes, is not something our members have much experience of!   Simon’s enthusiasm for his subjects certainly came through in his pictures which are displayed in National Magazines.
The 2015 calendars are going quickly – just a handful left so please ring if you would like one. 01780 720374

The next meeting is on MONDAY January 12th 2015 7.30pm at the Community Centre. VISITORS ARE MOST WELCOME.

North Luffenham Carpet Bowls Club

North Luffenham carpet bowls club

The winter season has just started.  Both teams are now in the first division of the North Cambs League because the 2nd team won promotion.  However  this means that the teams will have to play each other, once at home and once away.  Of course the venue will be in the same place, the community centre hall.

Confused!  The difference being that each team has its own mat which it plays on regularly, and is used to its foibles.  Quite clear really.

All the best to all players.  I hope the weather keeps fine for away games.

Community Defibrillator

The North Luffenham Community Defibrillator has now been installed and is situated at The Fox.

DCIM100SPORT DCIM100SPORT

For any medical emergency, first dial 999 (or 112) and ask for ambulance. An emergency ambulance will be dispatched to your address. If a cardiac arrest is suspected, and it is appropriate, the ambulance service will direct you to the defibrillator site and will give the code that opens the cabinet.

DCIM100SPORT

Our defibrillator is the latest model and has a video screen and a voice that instructs you how to use it. It obviously helps if you have had training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of a defibrillator.  An ‘awareness session’ was held some two months ago and a number of villagers attended from which it is hoped a number of volunteers will form a VETS Scheme (Village Emergency Telephone Scheme). The VETS Scheme is activated by the ambulance service, following the 999 call, contacting by phone a volunteer who will respond by bringing the defibrillator to the address required and helping in the resuscitation. Training for the VETS is being arranged and a date will be posted on the website and emailed to those who have expressed an interest at the ‘awareness session’.

For further information please follow the link for the Community HeartBeat Trust: www.comunityheartbeat.org.uk. For further information open the following link:  VETS, or contact Tim Smith using the form below:

YOGA WORKSHOP

Yoga Weekend Workshop Sunday 12th October 2014 2 – 4.30pm at Preston Village Hall
How Can Yoga Help Weightloss?
Yoga can be used as a physical exercise – just like any other… but in this workshop we’ll also look at the other aspects of yoga that can truly alter patterns of behaviour linked to comfort eating and image perceptions.  Not all serious and sweaty – we’ll take a lighthearted view at accepting ourselves as we are and develop strategies to embrace change in a fun and loving way.
Do Yoga! Weekend Workshops are great for new and existing students.  Those already attending classes can learn a fresh application for yoga or inspire their home practice.  They are ‘stand alone’ classes, taught from the basics up, and are ideal for people new to yoga – so why not come along and give it a try?
They are fantastic value at £15 per 2 1/2 hour session.

Please contact Deb King here to book

PLEASE BOOK EARLY TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT – ONLY 16 PLACES AVAILABLE.

Results from Annual Autumn Show 2014

The North Luffenham Garden Club held its 16th Annual Autumn Show this Sunday 14th September in the village Community Centre and school hall.

We were thrilled with the turn out, with 55 people entering one or more classes and a total of 389 entries overall, an all-time record! On Sunday morning when the entries were arriving, I was concerned we weren’t going to fit everything in! But that’s a brilliant problem to have!

Hall full of entries

Hall full of entries

The show has a really friendly, family feel to it. It really was a celebration of what everybody had achieved in their gardens, and a showcase of hidden talents with some stunning craft and photography entries.

We were also delighted that there were more children’s entries this year which included some from the School gardening club and the North Luffenham Beavers.

Entry into most humorous vegetable

Entry into most humorous vegetable

A campaign earlier in the year to encourage more flower arranging entries, with a series of free classes held in the village run by one of the members, Sally Lambert and a new prize of an RHS Grenfell Medal certainly paid off too, with 20 in total.

The hall was a wonderful sight – thank you to everyone who made the effort to put in entries, and to all the hardworking volunteers who helped the day run so smoothly.

The meeting on September 16th was well attended and we all enjoyed a very informative talk, given by Robin Stewart, lecturer, caterer and photographer.  Robin showed slides  of how methods of depicting Food has evolved over the ages, in Paintings and Photography.

His photos, with his own preparations to be used in promotions and magazines, were accompanied by descriptions of the use of backgrounds, lighting, lenses etc.  There was very little use of post production enhancement, preferring to use histograms and computer screens to adjust settings.
Robin ended by giving  us a demo of how he would set up and photograph a composition, using some delicious cupcakes made by a member of the Club.

I expect that everyone has taken away some ideas for a much more informed way of  looking at and setting up compositions. So – Food  will be the theme for the next meeting’s Photo Display on November 18th.
