Waterloo Medal

Fancy having your own Waterloo Medal than read on:

WATERLOO 200

The Waterloo 200 organisation will produce 500,000 replicas as part of events to mark anniversary of Wellington’s victory. It was the first medal issued by the British government to all soldiers who had fought in a battle, regardless of their rank. Now half a million Battle of Waterloo campaign medals are to be issued on a first-come, first-served basis to mark this year’s 200th anniversary of Wellington’s defeat of Napoleon.

Village resident to ride from Lands End to John O’Groats for charity

Tom Merrett charity cycle ride

While I have been a trustee of The Mango Tree Charity for over 10 years and helped young people raise thousands and thousands of pounds, I have never undertaken a sponsored event myself, and, I am not a cyclist! However, my ex-pupils always proved time and again that nothing is impossible so I have taken the plunge.

I have set-up my own website for the cycle ride at www.cycle4mango.co.uk and I can also be found on Facebook, where I’ll be updating my progress.

If you would like to make a donation towards my ride you can do so by going to my Just Giving donation page.

Thank you for your support!

Nic Merrett

The Mango Tree charity focuses its support for the 8644 registered orphans in Kenya and Tanzania. At its peak, there were over 13500 but communities are gaining strength and resilience now the peak of HIV/AIDS has passed so the charity is performing exactly as we had hoped – it seeing strengthening communities take up responsibility for their orphans.

Mango Tree is not an orphanage, but a Community Based Organisation with the slogan “Empowering orphans through Communities” . It is our greatest delight to see alumni from Mango Tree fund raise themselves in Kenya and Tanzania and also give practical support to younger orphans now that they are self reliant. Mango Tree rejects completely the philosophy of hand out from the rich West come what may!

John Humphrys – BBC Radio4 presenter said of Mango Tree,

“…It is a model of how a good charity should be run. It inspired me to set up my own small charity. If only there were more like it the world would be a better place…”

RANTHAMBHORE NATIONAL PARK AND THE SOUTH ATLANTIC

At the March 2015  meeting of the Camera Club, there was a good turnout for photojournalist speaker, Andrew James, who delighted us all with his splendid photographs of the wildlife of the Ranthambhore National Park, particularly those of the tigers and cubs.  It is quite rare for some of the situations photographed, to have been taken before – mothers carrying their cubs so close to the vehicles and people.   These were taken in temperatures of  over 40 degrees, in the scrub and vegetation.  Also included, were  pictures of local Indian people with their colourful clothes.

To bridge the two halves of this programme, Andrew presented some glorious views of Rutland, taken in the depths of the winter frosts.

We were  then shown photographs of  a completely opposite part of the world- stunning views of the mountains of South Georgia and the Falkland Islands– the old whaling station, albatross, antics of the elephant seals  and  the different breeds of penguins.  Those sparse, treeless wastes contrasted so strongly with the Indian photos.   Being in those two extreme living conditions must have been very demanding.

What a very enjoyable evening – our thanks to Andrew for bringing these two different environments to our club.

The next meeting of the Camera Club is on May 11, 7,30 at the Community Centre.  This will be a Practical evening.

The theme for Display is “Wildlife”
