CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT FOR YEAR 2013-2014 – Carpet Bowls Club

Please see below for Carpet Bowls Club Chairman’s report

CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT FOR YEAR  2013-2014

As usual the club has won a couple of competitions through the last year, although I must say we have not had as much success as we have been used to in recent years.

Both teams next year will play in the same division which will cause a few problems for the team captains. This will be further complicated by the  loss to the  club of Davide Russo who has gone to  work in Germany .  We should thank Davide for the tremendous bowls he has given our club over the years and for the support shown in helping the younger members  gain experience at competitions.  I hope he will come back upon  his return from Germany.

We also may have to face the loss of Rhys to the RAF in the near future.  Rhys has played for our club for more than half his life and can’t now remember not playing bowls.  He is a remarkable talent, who at the age of 15,  won the Cambridgeshire singles title and went to the national finals.    He has won several national titles with the county side, as did Davide.  Players like these are hard to come by and we have been exceptionally lucky to have had them in our ranks.

It was good to see so many players turn out for the presentation evening, a special mention to Margaret who picked up her second bowls trophy.  Carol and Kay also picked up their first trophies, hopefully the first of many.  Jessica and Katy are the only players in the league to have picked up winners trophies for two divisions in the same year.

I must thank Sylvia and Bill  for their continued work, Linda for opening up each and every week.  Both team Captains for somehow ,  managing to find a team to play in the depths of winter.  I hope we can get some of the more reserved members to play in some league games next year,  and some of the regular players to come  to some competitions and gain a little more experience.

Thank  you

Jason Ellis

North Luffenham to have a Defibrillator

Defibrillator situated at the Horse and Jockey

Defibrillator situated at the Horse and Jockey, Manton

You may have noticed a bright yellow box located on a wall or inside a telephone box in surrounding villages and towns. These, as many people know, are defibrillators and are an essential piece of equipment for local community schemes to provide ‘Community Access Defibrillation’ (cPAD). The defibrillator will be sited at the Fox and Hounds and this has been made possible by the kind permission and help of the landlord, Jason Allen.

Why have a defibrillator and a cPAD scheme? The answer to this question can be found on the website of a charity called the Community HeartBeat Trust (CHT), but basically North Luffenham is a rural community and following a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) expert medical help is unlikely to arrive within 5 minutes. Following SCA survival decreases by 23%: survival is only 5% with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) alone; 50% with defibrillation.

The acquisition of the defibrillator has been made possible with the support of the CHT, a generous donation of half of the funding from the Karen Ball Fund, and the other half provided by North Luffenham Parish Council.

One of the other essential elements of a cPAD scheme is the need for a number of local volunteers who are trained to respond to a sudden cardiac event (SCA), able to perform basic life support (BLS) with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and in the use of the automated external defibrillator (AED). This may sound rather daunting but BLS and CPR are not demanding techniques, skills easy to learn, and the AEDs are designed to be simple to use.

If you are interested in finding out more or thinking about becoming a volunteer then please contact Tim Smith, North Luffenham Community Scheme Organiser.

There is also a lot of information on cPAD schemes on the CHT website.

Village Website Content & Management Questionnaire

What should be the scope of the North Luffenham Village Website?

At the present only material related to the village is allowed to appear on the website and this was questioned at the Annual Parish Meeting, on the 14th April, and it was agreed that villagers should be asked for their opinion.

The Parish Council is the current owner of the website and is responsible for the maintenance and cost of running the website. Presently the cost is minimal because the website administrator has donated all website development and administration time for free, but this may not always be the case. In order to ensure the longevity of the website, it is preferable for it to belong to a body that represents the village such as the Parish Council.

One feature of the website that could be developed is a separate ‘forum’ and/or ‘comments’ at the bottom of each post in which people are able to voice their opinions. This could be useful, for example in feedback to the Parish Council, when topical issues related to the village are being discussed. However the content of the website needs to be monitored to ensure that no offensive, abusive or bullying posts appear.

The Parish Council would be grateful if you could complete the following questionnaire to try and establish the content, function and management of the website.
