Are you ready for winter?

As the nights get colder and darker, the chances of severe weather increase. Since 1990, gas and electricity network companies have invested over £80bn to make the UK’s gas and electricity supply more reliable than ever before. But storms, floods and other extreme weather can still cause damage and disruption.

That’s why the UK’s gas and electricity network companies have come together to launch the Be Winter Ready campaign. The campaign aims to help the public better-prepare for power cuts and gas emergencies that may result from bad winter weather.

To Be Winter Ready, you should:

  1. Know your free emergency numbers – in a power cut dial 105 or, for a gas emergency, dial 0800 111999.
  2. Prepare your home – keep a torch handy and get your appliances serviced by a Gas Safe registered engineer to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Vulnerable households can get extra support by signing up to the Priority Services Register. Contact your gas or electricity network to find out more. Visit www.energynetworks.org to find out who your network operator is.
  3. Keep your eyes open – keep an eye on the weather forecast and, if you have a power cut or a gas emergency, check on your neighbours.

Improved Oakham High Street with one-way traffic flow

Designs and proposed surfacing materials for an improved Oakham High Street with one-way traffic flow will go on display at Oakham Library from 14th November to 15th December 2017 as part of the town centre regeneration scheme being led by Rutland County Council.

The display will include design drawings, showing work to date on the proposed new highway layout and expanded pedestrian areas, as well the location of parking spaces, cycle routes and delivery bays for businesses.

In particular, there will be an opportunity to see and comment on the types of materials being considered for pavements, kerbs and road surfaces, along with examples of new street furniture, such as benches and lamp posts.

As part of the detailed design phase for the Town Centre Improvement Scheme, we have already begun approaching businesses, traders and other stakeholders directly for their feedback on the latest detail designs. People will also be able to view the scheme designs and comment online from 14th November by visiting: www.rutland.gov.uk/oakhamtowncentre

The information gathered will then be used to help create a final detailed design, which will be presented to Full Council for approval in March 2018.

For more information about the regeneration of Oakham Town Centre, I would encourage you to visit: www.rutland.gov.uk/oakhamtowncentre
Alternatively, please contact our project team by emailing: oakhamtowncentre@rutland.gov.uk

Dog Fouling

With the dark mornings and evenings there appears to be a rash of dog fouling on the pavements of Digby Drive, Chapel Lane, Church Street and Lyndon Road. Please be a responsible dog owner and clear up after your pet. If walking your dog in the dark please  keep your dog on a lead and carry a torch – always carry bags and ensure that any mess is cleared up immediately. Many thanks.

St George’s Barracks Development – Your View

As previously published, the Parish Council has created a Working Group, whose role will be to work with the Village to identify the key concerns relating to the proposed St George’s Barracks Development. The Group will advise the Parish Council and help to deliver research and feedback. The Group will provide a conduit to Rutland County Council and seek to influence the Project Board’s thinking. The PC Members of the Group are Paul Cummings, Tim Smith and Pete Burrows. Tim Collins has agreed to join the group as an advisor and lead on environmental matters.

To let us properly gauge opinion, it is proposed to hold a public meeting on 7th December at 7.30pm in the Village Church, to enable the Parish Council to understand concerns and aspirations regarding the development of the site. The meeting will also provide an opportunity to identify villagers willing to join the working group to assist in their work.

Parish Clerk / Responsible Finance Officer

Due to a change of circumstances the advertisement for a Parish Clerk has been withdrawn. With sincere apologies to anyone who had been considering applying for the job.

Volunteering Opportunity

Fineshade Wood needs you!

The Forestry Commission is currently recruiting volunteers to work in beautiful Fineshade Wood, located just off the A43, close to Stamford. This ancient woodland is a hidden gem, and needs friendly volunteers to help visitors make the most of what is on offer.

Our Welcome Volunteers find that telling people about the trails and wildlife at the site is very rewarding, and this role suits those who enjoy meeting people and yet don’t necessarily want to be physically active. If, however, you would like to get stuck into the practical conservation side of volunteering, we are always on the lookout for those who love wildlife and the outdoors and enjoy a bit of hard graft! So at Fineshade there is something for everyone!

For either opportunity please contact us at volunteering.fineshade@forestry.gsi.gov.uk or ring 0300 067 5347.
