Food Photography meeting September 2015

The new season of the Camera Club got off to a flying start on 14th September, with the return of speaker Robin Stewart.  Robin’s work as teacher and photographer for Food magazines has extended into commissions for Food factories locally.  Belvoir drinks, Stilton cheese and Melton pies photographs were shown.   Taking pictures of these factories  and other people’s cooking, together with his own creations, showed us Robin’s meticulous attention to detail- shadows, backgrounds and reflections- all so important.  Explanations of settings used and why, are so helpful for us  to try and improve our own photos.

The next meeting is on November 9th at the Community Centre at 7.30, when  Sue Churchill has kindly offered to show her photographs of a trip to Nepal.  In January we saw  pictures of her Grand Canyon trip and  I’m sure Nepal  will be equally stunning.  Everyone is very welcome to join us then.

The Parish Council cannot reject an application but it is a statutory consultee and can either support, object or make no comment on the application. The decision on the planning application is made by Rutland County Council but may well be influenced by views of the Parish Council or members of the public as local knowledge is of importance in their decision.

Members of the public may view planning applications online at: www.rutland.gov.uk/planning where support or objection and comments may be made. Comments can also emailed to planning@rutland.gov.uk but can also be made by post or in person. Comments must be made within 21 days of the application being posted.

The Planning Committee posts each application on the North Luffenham website when it is received and discusses each application. In order to reach a decision members of the committee may discuss with the applicant and neighbours affected. The committee in most cases is able to reach a decision but on occasions, for a contentious or major application, the Parish Council as a whole will be involved.

The planning committee would welcome queries, comments or advice concerning applications. Please contact Tim Smith by email: tim.smith2818@btinternet.com or phone 01780 360083.

A Double Bill Of Gilbert & Sullivan At Stamford’s Corn Exchange Theatre

It would be remiss of me not to point out to you that there is a wonderful evening in store at Stamford’s Corn Exchange Theatre from October 7-10 at 7-30 pm each evening with a matinee on Saturday at 2-30 pm.

The Stamford Gilbert & Sullivan Players will be performing “Trial By Jury” and “HMS Pinafore” and as if that isn’t enough between the two Operas there will be dancing from the highly acclaimed Welland School of Dance.

TRIAL BY JURY is a short 30 minute opera. It is a satire in which the librettist, Gilbert, sought to demonstrate the shortcomings of the Judiciary.  The case is one of Breach of Promise of Marriage and we are soon to discover that the Learned Judge (played by North Luffenham’s own Ian Ferguson) has some previous that makes it inappropriate that he should preside over such a case

HMS PINAFORE.  Here the satire is aimed at the Navy.  In the late 1880s W H Smith the bookseller was appointed First Lord of The Admiralty. There was Public outcry that a man with no naval experience should get such a post. Of course it wouldn’t happen today?  With the names changed this Opera is based around that scenario.  On this ship there is the ‘Baddy’ sailor which is played by Ian Ferguson of North Luffenham.

Both Operas contain delightful Music and a lot of fun. Not to be missed.

Tickets ranging from £11-50 to £13-50 (children £6) can be obtained from the box office on (01780) 766455

Cricket Club Open Day and Annual Lads vs Dads match

The Cricket Club will be will be holding an Open Day in conjunction with their annual “Lads vs Dads” cricket match on Sunday 13th September

Everyone is welcome to attend and enjoy a fun afternoon on the Oval – it would make a great village day out in conjunction with the Garden Club show, and an excellent opportunity to see what the Cricket Club is about, and what goes on there – you might even be lent a bat to try out the new nets.

There will be a barbecue and the club have obtained a licence for the afternoon and will be selling wine, soft drinks & beer from the pavilion

A Sweet & ice cream stall should be present, and also some fun games.

Lewis Hill from Leicestershire County Cricket Club will be joining us for an hour at around 3.30 – 4.30 to help with the award presentations.

Hope to see you there on Sunday afternoon.

Far From the Madding Crowd

We’ve got a great film to start off the autumn season (& today does feel seriously like autumn – perfect for thinking of a cosy night watching a great film): Far From the Madding Crowd.  As I shall be away next week, I’ve been to see it and thought it was really good.

Usual time and place: second Wednesday of every month in Uppingham Town Hall, doors open at 7pm for a 7.30 start.  You can either get the £5 tickets on the door or in advance from the Falcon (but we’ve never turned anyone away yet!).  We will do our usual homemade nibbles, but do bring your own plus a bottle of anything that appeals and maybe a cushion or two (though the moulded chairs are pretty OK).

We will tell you what we’ve got coming up for the next few months – all good ones!  Have a great evening, and I’ll catch up with you come October.  Susie

Village Working Party – Saturday 12th September – Postponed

Hi

the Village Working Party day scheduled for Saturday 12th September has had to be postponed.

Apologies to all those who were looking forward to a therapeutic tidy up

Have you ever looked around the village and thought, “I wonder who tidied that up”, or seen an area that was becoming a bit bedraggled and thought “someone needs to sort that out, I wonder who looks after it”

The answer on both occasions is quite possibly the village working party  – a group of volunteers who gather when necessary to tidy up some of the less loved corners of the village and maintain some of the nicer spots we appreciate

Next opportunity to take part in this social activity will be on Saturday 12th September, and so if you are happy to undertake some basic maintenance – weeding, painting, litter picking etc to help maintain the look of North Luffenham, and have some time you are willing to donate on the day, then contact Charles Cade or meet at the Cricket Pavillion at 9am on the Saturday morning.

Parish Council Meeting

The next meeting of North Luffenham Parish Council will be on Monday September 7th 2015 at 7-30 pm in the Community Centre and the agenda and supporting papers are shown below

Prince’s Countryside Fund

Please see note below from Libby Kingsley, Economic Development and Tourism Manager at Rutland County Council

The Prince’s Countryside Fund – Autumn Round to Open to UK on 7 September

The Prince’s Countryside Fund was established to support the sustainability and protection of farms and rural communities throughout the UK. The aim of the funding is to have a long-term positive impact on rural communities, helping those that live and work there to sustain the countryside by tackling key rural issues.

The Fund is available to not-for-profit organisations, charities, Social Enterprises, Community Interest Companies, Companies Limited by Guarantee, and Unincorporated Associations in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Funding is for a maximum of three years and for a maximum grant of £50,000 per project.

Projects must focus on at least one of the following countryside issues:

*       Thriving Rural Communities – projects that provide innovative solutions to deliver assets and services that keep rural communities together and develop a more sustainable rural economy ie, empowering communities to provide village services or create business hubs and employment for local people.
*       Rural Livelihoods – projects that focus on developing stronger, more sustainable farm and rural enterprises with the aim of halting the decline of the rural economy, ie providing rural businesses with support and advice or supporting farmer led initiatives.
*       Farmers of the Future – projects that help improve skills and increase opportunities of taking up rural careers, in particular in farming, with the aim of remaining within and contributing to the rural economy, ie training opportunities and apprenticeship schemes, inspiring and enabling new entrants to consider a career in farming.

The fund is expected to open on 7 September 2015 and close on 8 October 2015.
