North Luffenham to have a Defibrillator

Defibrillator situated at the Horse and Jockey

Defibrillator situated at the Horse and Jockey, Manton

You may have noticed a bright yellow box located on a wall or inside a telephone box in surrounding villages and towns. These, as many people know, are defibrillators and are an essential piece of equipment for local community schemes to provide ‘Community Access Defibrillation’ (cPAD). The defibrillator will be sited at the Fox and Hounds and this has been made possible by the kind permission and help of the landlord, Jason Allen.

Why have a defibrillator and a cPAD scheme? The answer to this question can be found on the website of a charity called the Community HeartBeat Trust (CHT), but basically North Luffenham is a rural community and following a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) expert medical help is unlikely to arrive within 5 minutes. Following SCA survival decreases by 23%: survival is only 5% with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) alone; 50% with defibrillation.

The acquisition of the defibrillator has been made possible with the support of the CHT, a generous donation of half of the funding from the Karen Ball Fund, and the other half provided by North Luffenham Parish Council.

One of the other essential elements of a cPAD scheme is the need for a number of local volunteers who are trained to respond to a sudden cardiac event (SCA), able to perform basic life support (BLS) with cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and in the use of the automated external defibrillator (AED). This may sound rather daunting but BLS and CPR are not demanding techniques, skills easy to learn, and the AEDs are designed to be simple to use.

If you are interested in finding out more or thinking about becoming a volunteer then please contact Tim Smith, North Luffenham Community Scheme Organiser.

There is also a lot of information on cPAD schemes on the CHT website.

Village Website Content & Management Questionnaire

What should be the scope of the North Luffenham Village Website?

At the present only material related to the village is allowed to appear on the website and this was questioned at the Annual Parish Meeting, on the 14th April, and it was agreed that villagers should be asked for their opinion.

The Parish Council is the current owner of the website and is responsible for the maintenance and cost of running the website. Presently the cost is minimal because the website administrator has donated all website development and administration time for free, but this may not always be the case. In order to ensure the longevity of the website, it is preferable for it to belong to a body that represents the village such as the Parish Council.

One feature of the website that could be developed is a separate ‘forum’ and/or ‘comments’ at the bottom of each post in which people are able to voice their opinions. This could be useful, for example in feedback to the Parish Council, when topical issues related to the village are being discussed. However the content of the website needs to be monitored to ensure that no offensive, abusive or bullying posts appear.

The Parish Council would be grateful if you could complete the following questionnaire to try and establish the content, function and management of the website.

Camera Club Meeting 20th May 2014

At the last meeting before the summer break, we had a display of the current Theme photos – A Good Day Out.  Andrew James gave advice and comments on these, which included the Brancaster Outing pictures.

The next get together will be an Exhibition to coincide with the Open Garden at Acre End on July 13th, in the School Hall. This will be a display of our favourite photos on all subjects.

At the next meeting on Sept 16th, the speaker will be Robin Stewart who will give a talk on Food Photography. Further details will be posted nearer the time.

Brancaster Staithe Camera Club Outing on Sunday May 11th

A group from the club enjoyed a wonderful “day of weather” Travelling from Luffenham at 7am and returning early evening, we went through down pouring rain, gusts of wind, and sand blows and even intervals of sunshine.

Andrew James led the group to different locations and projects throughout the day, including a local pub lunch. The thought of sitting in cars eating our sandwiches didn’t have a great appeal!

We began at the Staithe beach with all manner of boats, fishing boats, rowing boats which looked as if they had been there for a few generations, elegant yachts and all manner of outworn machinery, ropes and chains. Stacks of lobster pots and piles of junk brought a different dimension to our pictures – certainly out of our comfort zone.

Brancaster fishing boats

Moving along the beach to the breakwater, there were spectacular storm clouds, windsurfers and blowing sand.

Brancaster beach

The dunes along the coast at Brancaster contained many half buried beach huts and with the marram grass sparkling in the sunshine resulted in great pictures.

Brancaster beach huts

Andrew gave lots of help individually, as well as group teach-ins, we all found the day so rewarding. Grateful thanks go to him from all – it was a splendid balance of learning and fun.

Although it sounds as though the weather was against us, we have all done the “beach in sunshine” photos. This Sunday brought lots of dramatic scenes and extended our knowledge of how to set up for them.

Some of the photos will be displayed at the next Camera Club meeting on Tuesday, May 20th at 8pm in the Community Centre, North Luffenham School, the theme being A Good Day Out. Everyone is very welcome to come along.

Andrew’s Website is well worth a visit. Go to – andrewjamesphotos.co.uk

‘West End Wonders’ Summer Concert

Chater Community Choir will be entertaining audiences with their summer concert of West End musical favourites at Uppingham Parish Church on Saturday 14th June at 7:30pm in aid of the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.

The choir was formed in 2012 with the intention of providing a community choir in Rutland, based in North Luffenham, with members drawn from all over the county and beyond.

They sing for fun and for good health, for all ages and to gain a sense of community spirit.

They have so far raised nearly £3000 for charities, local and national.

In June they will also be taking part in the Arts for Rutland Mobilisation event at Kendrew Barracks to mark the centenary of World War 1.

‘West End Wonders’ Tickets are £5 and will be available from Tracy Steward or Jenny Clarke.

Celebrate the Summer Solstice with a Picnic in the Park

A few of us have decided to try and get the community together for a picnic on the Oval on 21st June.

This is a free event and people will have to bring their own food and drink.
